About Us

State institute for the Mentally Challenged is an autonomous society registered under the charitable society’s registration act 1995. It is registered on 23rd December 1995. This society is governed by a general council and an executive council. The management and control of affairs of the institute is vested with the general council of the institute. The minister in charge of General education is the President and secretary to the government in charge of General education is the vice president.

C.H. Mohammad Koya Memorial State Institute for the Mentally Challenged is popularly known as SIMC. SIMC has its head quarters at Pangappara, 10 Kms away from Trivandrum city.

Vision

The persons with intellectual challenges have equal rights to lead an inclusive and qualitative life. This may be realized with orchestrated and committed professionalism barrier free environment, equal opportunities, Convergent efforts, constructive attitudes and appropriate technological interventions.

Mission

To ensure total mainstreaming and total comprehensive rehabilitation through team approach facilitating equal opportunities, providing protection and lights, empowerment of persons with intellectual challenges and their families and by substantiating research and development of human resources.

Objectives

SIMC is working with specific objectives such as:

  • To establish, maintain and regulate the affairs of the Institution for the health care, protection and rehabilitation of the Socially, Physically and Mentally challenged children etc.
  • Emphasis is on providing specialties training so that the children can become part the mainstream of society.
  • Individualized training based on periodic Educational and Psychological assessments.
  • To promote literacy, educational, scientific and cultural activities by establishing maintaining and regulating different Institutions like technical, medical para-medical, academic, research and such other institutions.
  • Provide professional guidance and parental counseling to help rehabilitate the mentally challenged.

  • To create or help public awareness towards recognizing the mentally challenged motivating the general public to help rehabilitating them.
  • To organize or help to organize and co-ordinate training programmes and workshops in the realm of early detection of childhood disabilities especially in ICDS project areas.
  • To co-operate and associate with other institutions and agencies functioning both at national and international level and participate in the conferences and seminars with mental retardation and their rehabilitation programmes for the target groups with the prior sanction of the Govt.
  • Assist parents in understanding their children at their homes through parent discussion and counseling.
